The most disease resistant heartwood of all North American timbers,
the Osage orange is utilitarian.

These qualities make the Osage orange ideal for fencing and posts, soil stabilization, strip mine reclamation, landscaping, windbreaks, erosion control, and for weaponry. In a single-row young trees were prized for erosion control!
Such obvious qualities explain their distribution across the United States becoming a state Champion Tree as far north as Vermont.
