Predation keeps the entire ecosystem in balance. Recently analysis of the reintroduction to Yellowstone of another apex predator, Canis lupus, was able to associate predator presence (wolves in the park) with an ecosystem shift (change in the number of plants and animals in the park) increasing overall biodiversity with surprising results for even aquatic species (wolves in the park changed the number of fish, too).
